HISTORICAL MEMORY AND SECTARIAN CONFLICT IN ULSTER IN THE XIXTH CENTURY

Abstract. The author considers the historical memory features of two ethnic Ulster communities, and concludes that traumatized historical consciousness forced both Ulster communities to fight at the Boyne year in year out, therefore there was no generally accepted rule of law in Ulster for over two centuries, and for this reason the national identity of Ulster ethnic communities was formed under the influence of ongoing sectarian violence, which spiritual home was the XVIIth century.
