Abstract. The article is devoted to the ethnography of the Ossetians’ traditional marriage ceremonies of the XIX th-XX th centuries. Conflicts that arise in marriage including nuances associated with the payment of dowry, and the procedures of matchmaking are considered by the materials of periodicals, archival documents, published sources, and the author’s field researches. Special place is given to such traditional form of marriage as marriage by the abduction of the girl. Changes in rituals associated with the development of commodity-money relations are mentioned.
