Abstract. The article analyzes the role of the external social environment of general education institutions in modern conditions. The comparison of the notions "community", "commune" is conducted, and the content of the term "local community of school" is revealed from the sociological point of view. The features, on which basis the local community of school originates and functions as a social entity, are characterized. The author presents the conclusions of the exploring empirical research conducted in the Republic of Khakassia.
