HOMMAGE TRADITION IN R. SCHUMANN’S VARIATIONS

Abstract. The article is devoted to Robert Schumann’s early piano variations composed on the themes of his great predecessors and contemporaries. Main attention is paid to "Etudes in Free Variations Form on Beethoven’s Theme", which weren’t published during the composer’s life, – the composition, where Schumann develops hommage tradition, typical of variations. The composition, which is the prototype of "Symphonic Etudes" ор. 13, isn’t studied enough in modern musicology, and its structuring ambiguity causes many problems for performers. While comparing different versions of the autograph, Schumann’s desire to create an integral and large-scale composition, based on the philosophical comprehension of Beethoven’s creativity and two epochs dialogue, is revealed.
