Abstract. The philosophical and anthropological analysis of the relationship between fear and courage as an important problem of human life is conducted. The specificity of the strong-willed personality’s traits (boldness, bravery, heroism, fearlessness, valour), which have a direct link with courage, is shown. The article emphasizes that courage is not the absence of fear, but the ability of the human to confront it. The original definition of fear is suggested. One of the variants for overcoming fear by means of its opposite – courage – is singled out. The gender aspects of fear and courage are revealed, and the analysis of these phenomena in the religious discourse (Christianity, Islam) is given.
