CONTENT OF LETTERS FROM THE RUSSIAN CAPTIVITY DURING WORLD WAR I

Abstract. The author reveals the features of the private correspondence of soldiers and officers from the Central Powers and their allies under the conditions of the Russian captivity during World War I (1914-1918), pays special attention to foreign war prisoners’ letters content, to the control over personal correspondence on the part of military censorship, tells that the quoted extracts from the letters illustrate living conditions and life in concentration camps in Russia, as well as reveal the features of captured foreign soldiers’ perception of both the fact of capture and the surrounding reality; and concludes that war prisoners’ letters are the bearers of specific information significant to the analysis of war time psychology that allows revealing communication strategies and determining the features of behavioural practices under the conditions of captivity.
