TO BILINGUALISM ORIGIN IN UKRAINE: THE UKRAINIAN STATE EDUCATION POLICY (1917-1920)

Abstract. The author considers the features of bilingual environment formation in Ukraine, determines the key trends in the educational policy of Ukraine during 1917-1920, their influence on the development of the Russian-Ukrainian bilingualism, mentions that the creation of the Ukrainian education system during the period of the national revolution was the first such attempt within the post-imperial space, when the Ukrainian-language schools were established together with the existing Russian-language ones, and emphasizes that the young Ukrainian state did not conduct the total violent Ukrainianization, directing possible efforts to the revival of the Ukrainian nation, culture and language under the conditions of mass bilingualism.
