Abstract. On the basis of J. Baudrillard’s theory about three orders of simulacra the author explicates a simulacrum of the fourth order - a sign, in which the missing signifier indicates the absence of designatum. The beginning of the process of simulation is associated with the theme of emptiness and vanity in art in the genre of vanitas , the end of the process of simulation is characterized by the complete negation of reality. The article provides examples of simulacra of the fourth order in modern fashion and design (design-code of town, minimization of buttons, key board abandoning in gadgets, minimalism in interior, senseless graffiti).
