Abstract. The article considers a little-studied legend about Sameli containing valuable information for the reconstruction of the religious and mythological beliefs of the Ossetians. The aim of this work is to analyze the mythological content and to determine the origin of this folklore text. Having identified a number of significant correlations between the Ossetian Sameli and the main representative of the Jewish demonology Samael the author for the first time comes to the conclusion that the legend about Sameli is the result of the contamination of the Ossetian "Promethean" myth with the Jewish plots about Samael. The results of the study make clear ethnic and confessional relations in the North Caucasus region in the Middle Ages (the VIII-IX centuries).
