METAPHYSICS OF FEAR IN PHILOSOPHICAL AND MEDICAL RETROSPECTIVE OF ANTIQUITY

Abstract. The topica of fear is a peculiar link connecting philosophy and medicine. The article reveals the origins and content of the ancient philosophical and medical understanding of fear among synonymous notions: dread, anxiety, and cowardice. The ethical-aesthetic level of research is above etymological level thus allowing us to consider fear as the key category for moral consciousness as well. The author conducts the comparative analysis of philosophical and medical approaches to the understanding of fear, which agree upon the interpretation of fear as an epiphenomenon of the human being, a symptom of disease, a "bad habit of soul".
