Abstract. In the article the quantity of holdings and companies groups is analyzed on the basis of such criteria as belonging to federal districts, activity types and organizational-legal forms. The conclusion is made that such structure as holding is a widespread phenomenon for small and medium-sized business, of which joint-stock relations are not typical more often than not. The possibilities of "holding" notion expansion and "main company" notion substitution for "main link" are considered. It is suggested consolidating the issues of holdings creation and activity in the Russian Federation at legislative level.
