"DEMOGRAPHIC PRESSURE" AS BACKGROUND FOR THE SCOTTISH COLONIZATION OF AMERICA IN THE XVII CENTURY

Abstract. The article on the basis of the memories of contemporaries and the materials of domestic and foreign historiography investigates demographic situation in the Scottish society of the end of the XVI - XVII century. For the first time this problem is analyzed with the view of identifying the importance of "over-population" as one of backgrounds for the Scottish colonization of the New World accentuated by the initiator of the Scottish colonization campaigns in the XVII century, courtier and politician sir William Alexander from Menstrie.
