NEW RELIGIOUS MOVEMENTS IN THE CONTEXT OF THE HISTORY OF RELIGION

Yashin Vladimir Borisovich
Omsk State Pedagogical University

Abstract. In the author’s opinion, the common view that "the epoch of new religious movements (NRM)" begins with the mass dissemination of NRM in the USA and Western Europe in the 1960-1970s has no methodological foundations and is a mechanical transference of the specifics of religious processes in the West on the history of religion as a whole. We shouldn’t also exaggerate the connection of the genesis of NRM with the processes of secularization. The phenomenon of NRM is a universal constant of the world history, and while investigating it we should consider the general principles of the formation and functioning of religious innovations in the context of the civilization specifics of the concrete society in the certain period of its historical development.
