OTOKO GEISHAS AS PART OF THE TRADITIONAL JAPANESE CULTURE

Abstract. The article casts a light on such traditional Japanese cultural phenomenon as "otoko geishas (male geishas)", which still remains obscure outside Japan. Nowadays in Russia interest for the Japanese culture has deepened. The sphere of the industry of the traditional Japanese entertainments, an integral part of which this phenomenon appears to be, has always attracted interest of researchers. The paper pays special attention to the origin of male geishas in Japan and their nominations. The author reveals the meaning and examines the genesis of such terms as "geisha", "otoko geisha", "houkan", "taikomochi".
