Abstract. In the article by the material of the international activity of the Order of Malta and its internal documents the international legal status of the Order is studied. The uncertainty of this status is manifested owing to the combination of the claims of the Order for sovereignty and the quite rare in the XXI century form of its organization - the military order. Attention is also paid to the consideration of the relations of the Order of Malta with the Catholic Church, the part of which the Order is, and the recognition of the Order by the international community.
