Abstract. In the article the connection of rationalistic school in the Byzantine philosophy of the X-XII centuries with ancient philosophy is considered. The development of rationalism in Byzantium was greatly conditioned by a new stage of ancient heritage understanding. Michael Psellos, John Italus and their followers aiming at combining faith with reason rested upon the works of ancient philosophers. The representatives of rationalism were condemned by Church, which rejected the idea of new synthesis between ancient philosophy and Christianity. However the activity of rationalists laid the foundation for the occurrence of humanistic ideas in Byzantine.
