Abstract. The article is devoted to the examination of the sign systems of Yelets lace of the beginning of the XIX century as a composite part of the semiotic system of the region, in which the social codes of mentality, behavior and world vision are reflected. Three groups of ornaments, peculiar for the multi-pair lace-making of the period under consideration: geometric, graphic and vegetative, are analyzed. It is shown that the semiotic status of Yelets lace was rather high, it was perceived as a sign symbolizing ethnographic, historical or social-everyday processes.
