"SINISTER" IMAGE OF FLOWERING CHERRY TREE (SAKURA) IN CLASSICAL LITERATURE AND CONTEMPORARY MASS CULTURE OF JAPAN

Abstract. The article considers the phenomenon of a flowering cherry tree (sakura) as an occurrence, which has received ambiguous interpretation in Japan national culture. Attention is paid not to the usual, well known to spectators and readers all over the world "beautiful" aspect of the perception of a flowering sakura, but to a more rare and specific "sinister" one that has found its reflection both in classical literature and in the contemporary mass culture of Japan (particularly, in manga comics, animated films and anime series).
