WAR THEME IN OFFICIAL ART OF THE EMPEROR MAXIMILIAN I OF HABSBURG

Abstract. At the turn of the XV and XVI centuries the transformation of the ideas about war occurred in European culture: a more "pragmatic" attitude replaced a chivalrous ideal. In the work the issue on the reflection of this transformation in the monuments of the official art of the emperor Maximilian I of Habsburg is considered for the first time. In the literary programme and its artistic realization the co-existence of the traditional and new perceptions of war is revealed. Special attention is paid to the xylographs of H. Burgkmair and the miniatures of A. Altdorfer interpreting war in the most innovative way.
