The Main Military Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation
Abstract. The article deals with the circumstances of the formation in 1942 as a reserve of the Supreme Command-in-Chief of the Red Army of the 1 st Fighter Aircraft Army. The unit of this type was the only one, which took part in combat operations. On the basis of archival materials, domestic and foreign sources the author analyzes the results of the fighting performance of the 1 st Fighter Aircraft Army at Bryansk front, the arisen problems and the identified shortcomings. The reasons for the Soviet command to refuse the use of aircraft armies and to accept other forms of the organization of aircraft reserves are revealed.
