"SIN" AND "CRIME" AS CROSSING CONCEPTS IN NORMATIVE SOURCES OF ANCIENT INDIA

Abstract. The article discusses correlation between concepts "sin" and "crime" in the ancient Indian ethical treatises - dharmasastra Manu and little-known in the Russian historical-legal science dharmasastras Yajnavalkya and Vishnu. The author offers several classifications of sins based on various reasons: the form of guilt, the degree of public danger, the order of the imposition and execution of redemption. On the basis of using comparative analysis, hermeneutics, contextual analysis, historical-legal analysis and other methods the author concludes that dharmasastras distinguished between sinful and criminal acts, however, this distinction was not absolute.
