SUBSTANDARD BEHAVIOUR OF STEPANCHIKOVO VILLAGE INHABITANTS

Abstract. The article considers the phenomenon of sin as substandard behaviour in the context of religious normative essence. Sin is a deviation from norm as standard and norm as average. The personages of the narrative "Stepanchikovo Village and Its Inhabitants" by F. M. Dostoevsky are used as illustrative material for the analysis of sin as religious substandard essence. The substandard deeds of Egor Il'ich Rostanev reveal, mainly, the effect of such sin as non-development of moral character in oneself. The image of Foma Fomich Opiskin in the context of religious substandard essence is a combination of various sins: pharisaism, vanity, pride, love for glory and others.
