SHAME: ETHICAL ATAVISM OR MORALLY SIGNIFICANT EMOTION?

Abstract. The article deals with the ethical and philosophical interpretation and terminological analysis of such an emotion as shame. The positive and negative aspects of the manifestation of this emotion are given through the lenses of classical and contemporary ethical researches, and its significance in moral life is identified. Moreover, the author makes the opposition comparison of the psychological and ethical-philosophical understanding of the consequences of the experience of shame, which is necessary in order to ascertain its role within the framework of the individual, perfectionist and social forms of morality.
