BRIDESMAIDS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS IN WEDDING CEREMONY OF THE RUSSIANS IN THE MARI TERRITORY

Abstract. The article is devoted to the complex research of bridesmaids’ functions - the performers of wedding songs in the wedding ritual of the Russians in the Mari territory. The work has interdisciplinary nature, and it is written at the junction of ethnography and ethnomusicology. Basing on the analysis of local history works and the author’s field data recorded from the Russian population in different regions of the Republic of Mari El it is ascertained that singers, who had mastered the corpus of wedding songs since childhood, played an important role in the formation of the emotional atmosphere of wedding ceremony.
