Abstract. The article analyzes the performances of Shakespeare’s "King Lear" at St. Petersburg stage of the last decade. The comparison of different directorial interpretations and approaches to the scenic development of the great playwright’s text is given. The author reveals "narrow" places of director’s work with Shakespeare, for example, free enough interpretation of the text and structure of the tragedy, and inattention to the poetic structure of Shakespeare’s masterpiece. The author determines the methodology of staging and its relation to modernity.
