TACTICS OF THE HASMONEAN ARMY IN THE BATTLE WITH CENDEBAEUS: INTERPRETATION OF THE FIRST BOOK OF MACCABEES (16.7)

Karanaev Mikhail Nikolaevich
Kazan National Research Technical University named after A. N. Tupolev (Branch) in Nizhnekamsk

Abstract. The article is devoted to the interpretation of the fragment of the first Book of Maccabees, which tells the story of the battle between John Hyrcanus and the Seleucid commander Cendebaeus. The author suggests a new interpretation of the tactics of the Judaic army implying the dismounting of riders for their placement in infantry line and the strengthening of flank cavalry detachments by light infantry. This hypothesis allows us to take a look at such problems as the equipment of the Judaic cavalry and the tactics of the Hasmonean army that are poorly covered in sources and historiography.
