Abstract. The paper justifies the necessity to use culturological approach as a general methodological foundation for the study of the book and its institutions. The article for the first time introduces the conception "biblio-culturology" into scientific use, presents the authors’ original definition of this term, and reveals its content. The authors propose using a new sphere of culturological knowledge to solve fundamental, anthropological and applied problems associated with the functioning of the book as a universal of human activity.
