RELIGIOUS SYMBOLISM IN POPULAR CULTURE: POLYSEMANTIC NATURE OF TREE IMAGE

Abstract. Popular culture widely uses many religious symbols, and tree image is not an exception. In modern cinematograph, fantasy literature and computer role-playing games the semantics of trees is multi-dimensional and the sign row represented by this image is similar to the tree symbolism typical for religious traditions. Tree functions as a world axis binding together different strata of existence, and not only spatial but also temporal, integrates micro- and macrocosm, embodies revival, life and vegetation, the relation of a human being and nature, carries moral aspect.
