HAMARTIOLOGICAL CONCEPTION BY HELMUT RICHARD NIEBUHR

Vorokhobov Aleksandr Vladimirovich
Nizhny Novgorod Theological Seminary

Abstract. The article examines the unorthodox hamartiological conception by H. R. Niebuhr. Following the classical Reformation doctrine, H. R. Niebuhr considered the hamartiological conception as a constituting element of Christian anthropology. He rejected the orthodox Protestant hereditary sin conception focusing on personal responsibility. Sin for him is basically a religious, not ethical phenomenon associated with personal relations with God. Sin is conditioned by misunderstanding of God and subsequent disloyalty to Him.
