METHODOLOGY OF STUDYING THE PROBLEM OF STYLE IN OLD RUSSIAN ARCHITECTURE OF THE END OF THE XV - THE FIRST THIRD OF THE XVI CENTURY

Abstract. The article is of methodological and historiographical character and is devoted to the interpretation of the "style" category in works of Russian art critics in respect of Old Russian architecture in general and architecture of the end of the XV - the first third of the XVI century in particular. The notion "style" as applied to Russian medieval architecture first appeared in connection with the study of Italian masters’ works in the Moscow Kremlin. The author analyzes two basic approaches to the problem of style in Old Russian architecture outlined in the books "The Essays on the History of Old Russian Architecture" by A. I. Nekrasov and "The Canon and Style in Old Russian Art" by G. K. Wagner.
