Abstract. The author considers change of the funeral rite in the second half of the XIX - at the beginning of the XX century. The article describes features of burial of notable estates representatives, officials, and military men. Specific examples demonstrate influence of new tendencies in the funeral rite at the beginning of the XX century that marked emergence of the so-called ceremony of civil funeral. One more characteristic feature of such new civil ceremony was negligence to cemeteries.
