Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of those ideas about the history of the origin and development of serf relations in Russia, which existed among the landed nobility on the eve of the peasant reform. The author considers the impact on these ideas of the conceptions that were popular in historical science. Particular attention is paid to the interconnection of the ideas about the origins and essence of serf relations, which were widespread among peasants and their owners.
