Song Jie
Hainan State University, People’s Republic of China

Abstract. The article deals with the reasons of the origin of wine-making in Astrakhan region and the stages of its formation and development in the period from the XVII to the XIX centuries. The author presents the history of wine-making in Astrakhan region as an important stage of the culture of viniculture and the alimentary culture of Russia on the whole. It is postulated that until the XIX century the Lower Volga region compensated for the Russian tsar’s court and the Orthodox Church the lack of wine for secular and liturgical purposes, and this was favored by the government encouragement and the active work of local and visiting wine-makers.
