LAND PROBLEM IN KABARDA AND BALKARIA IN THE PERIOD OF THE CIVIL WAR (1918-1920)

Abstract. The article examines a land problem in Kabarda and Balkaria in the period of the civil war of 1918-1920. The author justifies the complicated nature of land relations in the Terek region that were conditioned by the shortage of land among the mountain people. The decree on land socialization in the region, which was approved under the Bolsheviks’ pressure at the Second Congress of the Peoples of the Terek Region, didn’t solve the agrarian problem but aggravated it transferring into the aspect of interethnic relations since it was proposed to satisfy certain peoples’ need for land at the expense of other peoples.
