THE USA DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE AND FOREIGN POLICY: ARGUMENTS PRO ET CONTRA (SPRING-SUMMER 1776)

Abstract. The article analyzes a discussion between radical and moderate Whigs-patriots in the Continental Congress on the problem of interrelation between the USA declaration of independence and foreign policy development. The chronological framework of the paper covers the period from April till July, 1776 - crucial time in the American history characterized by high uncertainty concerning future relations between the North American rebellious colonies and Great Britain. The paper identifies the specificity of the Founding Fathers’ views concerning the advisability and relevance of the USA declaration of independence in the context of international processes; the author analyzes internal and external factors influencing the delegates’ decision, identifies strategic purposes while planning and implementing the North American state foreign policy after the declaration of independence on July, 4, 1776.
