LEONHARD BECK AS A MASTER OF EARLY GERMAN LANDSCAPE

Frolova Lyudmila Valer'evna
The State Hermitage Museum

Abstract. The creative originality of L. Beck, Augsburg painter of the beginning of the XVI century, is associated with the increasing role of landscape background in genre painting. Beck’s landscape is integrated with the vigorous activity of a human. Being a background for a heroic act the landscape helps to represent the personage’s character, to emphasize the emotional colouring of a story. Beck’s landscapes are similar in their ornamentality to H. Burgkmair’s works. The special expressivity and spirituality makes them similar to Danube school but the chronological frameworks of L. Beck’s creative work allow concluding on his autonomous search for new artistic forms.
