Abstract. The article considers various approaches to the substantiation of the category of sense, among which the interpretation of sense as a phenomenon of integrity in the system links of awareness is singled out. This approach within the framework of phenomenological philosophy is coordinated with a special ontology of the event - the ontology of the event world, within which consciousness is also considered as an event of sense-formation. The phenomenon of variability of sense is analyzed and basic variants of sense-formation, connected with different modes of thinking - rational, aesthetic and mystical - are substantiated. Thus, the prospect of constructing a theory of consciousness is demonstrated, which is very important in the context of the dominance of the epistemological discourse and the expansion of cognitive sciences inclined to eliminate the notion of consciousness.
