Abstract. The article is devoted to creativity of the artist D. I. Karatanov, who at the beginning of the XX century determined the main directions of artistic life of Krasnoyarsk. On the basis of retrospective periodicals and little-known archival materials, the majority of which have never been introduced into scientific use, the key events of his creative activity are designated that affected the cultural processes of Krasnoyarsk and the main regional centres. The latter was clearly manifested through formation of the system of art education, exposition processes, the ethnographic science, development of Siberian painting.
