EVOLUTION OF THE ORNAMENTED INITIAL IN THE ENGLISH BOOK MINIATURE OF THE EARLY MIDDLE AGES

Abstract. The article examines the ornamented initial in the English book miniature of the early Middle Ages, identifies its basic types and development stages. Paying special attention to the initial typology and nature of ornamental d?cor the author considers design of the most important for the initial evolution English manuscripts of the VII-XI centuries. Using the comparative-historical analysis the researcher identifies relation between monuments of different periods and shows the ornamented initial development as a gradual and integrated process.
