PAINTED CERAMICS OF GNATHIAN STYLE

Abstract. The article is devoted to painted ceramics of Gnathian style, a unique phenomenon originated in workshops of Southern Italy in the IV century B.C. Ceramics of Gnathian style is available in expositions of many Russian and foreign museums but small in size and unpretentiously painted, these vases often stay unnoticed for a wide circle of art lovers. The author describes the basic forms, style peculiarities and themes of Gnathian style ceramics in different periods of its development, discovers meaning of the basic images and ornamental motifs of paintings, provides concrete examples from collections of Russian and foreign museums.
