AXIOLOGY OF KEM’S URBAN SPACE IN ORAL STORIES OF THE TURN OF THE XX-XXI CENTURIES

Abstract. The article for the first time describes the axiology of ancient Pomorye Kem town urban space represented in the oral stories of the turn of the XX-XXI centuries. Axiological markers are considered as a means of the citizens’ collective and personal identification. It is shown that the key role in the town presentation belongs not to secular but to confessional objects - churches and chapels. According to Kem residents, they form the town’s sacred centre. Spatial location of Kem’s sacred centre changed over the two centuries depending on historical situation. The paper discovers the specificity of "popular" interpretations of the sacred urban complex conception, describes the history of constructing local churches (combination of "bookish" knowledge and "knowledge" acquired from the ancestors; mythologization of artefacts, imparting emblematic meaning to the objects). The analysis of axiological "mapping" represented in oral stories identified value dominants in the citizens’ consciousness: opposition of secular and sacral worlds, sharpness of memory, and self-identification as Kem resident.
