PEISISTRATOS AND MILTIADES THE ELDER: WHO WAS THE INITIATOR OF THE COLONY MOVE IN THRACIAN CHERSONESE?

Submitted: 04.11.2018
Abstract. The article aims to find out who was the initiator of the Athenian settlement move in Thracian Chersonese in the middle of the VI century B.C.: was it exclusively a private expedition of Miltiades the Elder, or is it possible to trace the state participation in the person of the tyrant Peisistratos? Basing on the analysis of scarce and contradictory information from ancient texts, the author comes to the conclusion that the settlement establishment was beneficial to both parties, consistent with the spirit of the Athenian foreign policy of that period, and undoubtedly contributed to strengthening the position of Athens in the Thracian region, therefore it is possible to assume Peisistratos’ direct involvement in the arrangement of the Athenian expedition to Thracian Chersonese.
