Abstract. The article is devoted to identifying the status and role of a woman in the Mongolian family of the XII-XIII centuries. Analysing the information contained in historical chronicles, legal documents and travel essays of that time, the author concludes that a woman’s status was high enough; she enjoyed a sufficient degree of freedom in the family sphere. The paper analyses in detail a woman’s roles in the family: wife, mother and daughter. It is shown that widowed representatives of the Mongolian elite often performed a regentess’s duties and influenced political processes.
