Submitted: 17.09.2019
Abstract. The article is devoted to a relevant problem of the modern Mongolian studies - the description and semantic analysis of the temple architecture. The author considers the step-by-step formation and application of the integrated methodological approach, which allows revealing the semantics of the temple architecture. The analysis is focused on a mandala image, which is a key concept of the Buddhist architecture. The paper tries to reconstruct the original mandala and, relying on its symbolism, semantics and on the temple graphical analysis, proposes an interpretation of the compositional structure of the temple and its key elements. This methodological approach is applied to describe and analyse the Lavran temple of the Erdene Zuu monastery.
