Abstract. The article examines poorly investigated historical aspects of interaction of the Soviet physicians with indigenous peoples in the north of the Buryat-Mongolian ASSR while developing the socialist healthcare system in this region. Analysing a published medical report and unpublished archival documents, the author identifies the peculiarities of medical examination of the Soyots and the Evenks paying special attention to medical perception of their everyday life and health problems. The paper provides a Soviet physician’s description of the Soyots’ traditional lifestyle, emphasizes medical interpretation of the causes of prevalence of parasitogenic, dermic and venereal diseases among the Soyots. The structure of the Buryatia Evenks’ sickness rate is revealed.
