Abstract. The article examines origins of the Kyrgyz folk dance, reveals historical and theoretical aspects of studying the Kyrgyz art and identifies the basic approaches to the problem of its formation. Analysing the rites, customs, visual and musical art of the Kyrgyz people, the author concludes about the existence of the ancient Kyrgyz dance, which was lost due to religious oppression, poverty, enslavement and the very way of the nomadic people’s life. Nevertheless, in the process of evolution of the Kyrgyz folklore ("Manas" epic, rites, songs, dance, folk customs), elements of the national dance have survived till nowadays. They’re fully represented in creative work of professional dancers.
