PRABHUPADA’S PERSONALITY AND CREATIVE WORK: SOURCE STUDY PROBLEMS

Abstract. The article considers the problems of source study regarding the personality and written heritage of the famous Indian religious and philosophical figure Abhaya Caranaravinda Bhaktived?nta Sv?mi Prabhupada (1896-1977). The paper shows that his merits are ambiguously interpreted in domestic orientalism and Indian studies: from highly positive evaluations (E. A. Torchinov) to extremely negative opinions (V. K. Shokhin) and moderate assertions (N. R. Guseva). The authors have developed a general four-part classification of sources regarding the interpretation of Prabhupada’s personality and creative work: a) historical sources; b) sources of comparativistic nature; c) sources of personal character; d) sources of philosophical and hermeneutic nature. The paper repeatedly emphasizes the necessity for systematic studies of Prabhupada’s biography, oral and written heritage.
