Abstract. The article is devoted to analysing the transformation of M. S. Gorbachev’s image in the English-speaking media discourse. The British, USA, Canadian and Australian newspaper publications of 1985-1991 served as a research material. The study is based on methodological conceptions of M. Foucault, T. V. Dijk, M. Pecheux, D. Pageaux, J. Leerssen. The stages of forming the Soviet leader’s new image are examined. Analysing the metaphors and historical parallels used by newspaper journalists, the authors identify the mechanisms of irrational influence of media discourse on the readers.
