Abstract. Huge achievements in the development of information and communication technologies have radically affected social and individual life. In this paper the author considers both the positive aspects and difficulties of human existence in the digital society. Particular attention is paid to such important consequences of the incredible speed of technological progress as the situation of discomfort and the need to adapt to continuous changes. The author comes to the paradoxical conclusion that an essential driving force that motivates an individual and the society as a whole to development, evolution and progress is a strong emotional phenomenon - fear.
