BIBLICAL ALLUSIONS AND REMINISCENCES IN A. P. CHEKHOV’S SHORT STORY “ROTHSCHILD’S FIDDLE”

Abstract. This article analyzes biblical allusions and reminiscences in Anton Chekhov’s creativity, in particular, in his short story “Rothschild’s Fiddle” containing the Old and New Testaments associations. The paper carries out a comparison of elements of intertextuality common for religious and artistic texts, as well as ideas and symbols, restores the sacred subtext of the literary work and finds out the Russian classic writer’s religious-philosophical position.
